Dear Mom and Dad,
I’ve been in pearl harbor for a week now getting ready to ship out. The weather here is amazing and will miss this. It’s been a long fight even without the U.S in the war and now I get to do my part to help in the war. I can’t say much about tactics cause I really don’t know about them. I’ve been stationed on the USS Arizona even if we did live in Washington. I’ve been promoted again to sergeant of the US Marines while we were here. I’ll write again soon.

I looked up from the letter. I was sitting in my cot aboard the arizona just waiting for any alarm or an announcement to get up and start going, I heard nothing so I place the letter in my jacket pocket and laid down not even checking the time. It felt late nobody had stirred at all the entire time I was writing to my parents. I looked over at the calendar. Nobody had crossed off the 6th in the december portion of the calendar. Hearing and seeing nothing I quietly got up with my pencil and crossed off the sixth. It was December 7th, 1941 two weeks to go till my birthday. Not knowing the time I quietly walked back to my cot and fell asleep.
I was woken from the alarm going off. I looked around nobody was in the room anymore, last to get up on a drill again. I slid on my boots as fast as I could fumbling with the laces, that’s when I heard it. Gunshots and yelling, this isn’t a drill I thought to myself. I sprinted down the long metal hallway, it reminded me of a giant metal beast with me running around inside it. The stairs came quickly in front. The ship shook, I stumbled and fell.
“What the hell was that?” A voice said behind me.
I turned around a kid about my age around 5’10 with long black hair was running up behind me. He repeated the question.
“What the hell was that?”
“Don’t know, what’s your name and rank soldier?” I asked
“Corporal Tagen Garris of the US Marines.” Tagen responded.
“ We got to get top side, you got the time by chance. Everybody was gone when the alarm went off.”
“ No idea sir, all I know is that it feels like it’s about 8 a.m.”
We ran together up the stairs, one last long hallway before we would reach top side. The ship shook again knocking us off balance.
“Damn it this is getting annoying.” Tagen said right next to me.
“We’re almost topside, we got to keep going.”
The hatch to the top deck was open. We ran out on deck and didn’t see anything in the ocean that might have been attacking us, but that’s when we heard it. A humm above us, planes were everywhere. Somebody in a run by heading to the 50 caliber machine guns mounted to the ship for AA. Tagen yelled at him.
“Tails, what are you doing?”
“I’ma shoot the bastards down!” he responded with a yell.
Gun fire from the 50 cal was all you could hear on the deck. He seemed to be enjoying, the roar from the 50 cal tearing up at the planes. Next thing we knew there was an explosion and the man Tagen knew as “Tails” and the 50 cal was gone.
“Shit they're dropping bombs on us from the planes.”
“No shit.” Tagen responded.
Another bomb hit the ship and there was another explosion that shook the ship. Two more hit the ocean right next to us.
“We got to get off the ship.”
“No we can put the fires out, we can save the Arizona.” I responded.
Another bomb struck the ship.
“The Arizona is lost we can’t save her.”
I looked up. The planes were above us, it looked like it dropped something right above us and it was traveling quickly. The railing was right next to us. It was getting closer and bigger, heading right for Tagen and I. I grabbed Tagen and threw him overboard. I leapt the railing and joined him in falling as the bomb hit where we were just standing. I felt the heat and got hit with shrapnel as I fell.
I hit the water, it felt like a ton of bricks had just hit me in the chest. I couldn’t see Tagen at all. I had to surface, my lungs were burning for air. I kicked my legs as fast as I could, it felt like I was going nowhere just staying in one spot. Somebody grabbed me around the waist and kicked up toward the surface. I heard a boat pull up next to us and we were pulled up into it.
“Captain Elijah, Sir.” I saw Tagen salute to whoever the captain was but couldn’t turn my head around enough to see him.
“Corporal I need you on that 50 cal in front of the boat. We need to clear the way and try to push the invasion back.”
Tagen stepped over my to head to the front, the Captain must have been at the wheel the entire time. I tried to stand up, I was hit with a spasm of pain, I looked down and had a piece of the Arizona in my leg from when I jumped overboard. The boat roared and we took off from where we had been lifted out of the water, I couldn’t see anybody around me. They must be at their station I thought to myself. We pulled away, I looked up at the Arizona crippled just as the final bomb fell and put it out of commision for good. It caught fire and started to burn as it sunk into the bay. I heard the 50 cal starting to shoot, my leg was in pain. It was starting to get harder and harder to stay conscious, my sight was getting tunnel vision, feeling light head. I leaned back to look at the sky and slumped unconscious to the floor of the boat.
I woke in a frantic, I tore at the IV they had in my arm and tried to stand up. The doctor and nurses came in quickly and settled me down. My leg hurt like hell. They had explained to me that a piece of metal from the explosion had lodged itself in the muscle of my leg and that I would not be able to continue on in the war. They told me that Tagen had been fine from me throwing him over before jumping myself and that he was awarded the medal of honor for helping push back the attack. The USS Arizona was destroyed along with basically all of its crew. The fight was over for me for now, but I would return even if it would kill me. I would help end this war.
